Kőszeg

Perhaps one of Hungary’s most charming small towns, Kőszeg, and the surrounding mountain range are only 20 kilometers from Bük. The historic inner town of this National Heritage Site in Vas County is home to several historic monuments, thus offering a genuine atmosphere. In addition to history-loving adventurers, ecotourism enthusiasts also like visiting the region, as the Kőszeg Mountains just outside of the town are rich in natural wonders. Before the hike, it is worth reviewing the available trails, because it is easy to get lost in the wild.

Kőszeg

Kőszeg—an undoubtedly beautiful and tranquil small town preserving the atmosphere of the past successfully—is located in Hungary’s northwestern corner along the Kőszeg Mountains, in the valley of the Gyöngyös stream. Its secret is obviously the preserved past embedded in a wonderful natural environment.

Jézus szíve templom

Church of Jesus’ Heart

One of the town’s symbols that defines the atmosphere of Kőszeg’s inner town, and for a good reason.

The inner town is a long horseshoe shaped area within the town ring and it is the oldest and historically most notable part of the town. Houses built in the 14–15th century and old-fashioned shops standing one after the other telling old stories, and visitors can stroll on paved roads that were trodden by locals centuries ago. The most famous sight of the former royal town is the castle that was built in the 13th century, originally in Gothic style, named after its most famous defender, Miklós Jurisics. The most famous of its many sieges dates back to 1532 that is commemorated every day at 11 a. m. with bell tolls from the tower of the second largest church of Vas county (Church of Jesus’ Heart). The parish church, one of the town’s symbols, is a Neogothic style building at the junction of the Main Square and the Castle Ring, and—being just over 100 years old—is relatively young in terms of the historical value of Kőszeg.

Going through the Heroes’ gate, the Jurisics square, one of the most beautiful squares of Hungary, meets the eye. Here stands Hungary’s oldest building that preserved its original function, the Town Hall, the last double-arched building monument in the country.

It is worth taking the time to admire the square, since it gives a glimpse of what it was like to be a town resident or a trader arriving at the town a few hundred years ago. It is just like traveling back in time and also an opportunity to relaxation for visitors, while honoring the work of our ancestors.

Geschriebenstein lookout tower

The lookout tower that belongs both to Hungary and Austria is accessible from both sides.

In addition to history enthusiasts, the small border town is also a center for ecotourists, as the Kőszeg Mountains attract hikers in great numbers.

While hiking along the designated trails, visitors can learn about the unique flora of Hungary. The harmony of the crystal clear air coming from the Alps, the forest and the scenic landscape guarantee ultimate refreshment and relaxation. The environment is enchanting in every season. Geschriebenstein, being the highest point in Transdanubia, provides a magnificent view all year around. It is impossible to list all the attractions here, so the only thing safe to say is: Kőszeg and its area are definitely worth a visit!

The charming villages in the area also cannot be left without mention, since they form an integral part of the Geschriebenstein Nature Park. With their rich natural and cultural heritage, there are several outstanding opportunities for some good exercise. It is undoubtedly worth taking a hiking trip and visiting the most famous villages around here.

The area is rich in vibrant festivals as well, such as the Chestnut Festival in Velem that was inspired by the characteristic plant of the Kőszeg Mountains and a valuable product of the area: the sweet chestnut. Further good examples are the traditional Siege Days or the Orsolya Day Fair , a local event primarily popular among gastronomy enthusiasts.

There is no need to write a teaser for the Kőszeg Castle, because those visiting the town know exactly that this special “town castle” with its exhibitions and magnificent view is a top half-day program.

If you would like to stop time, get away from the hectic everyday life and unwind, definitely visit Kőszeg and find out why this beautiful small town is considered a real wonder of Hungary.
